LAKE CHARLES – McNeese Cowboy middle-distance runner
Omer El-Fadl set a new Cowboy Relays record in the 1500-meters on Saturday in McNeese's first home meet since 2019 while former Cowgirl shot put champion and current student assistant coach Janelle Fullerton set a new meet record in her premier event.
El-Fadl clocked a 3:52.90 to win the men's 1500 and breaking the old mark of 3:56.01 set in 2015 by Matt Rice of ULL. Fullerton threw 50-4 to break the old record of 50-0 set in 2019 by Lakeitha Elmore of ULM.
Over the years, the Cowboy Relays has been named the Bob Hayes Challenge to honor the memory of the longtime head coach and athletic director. His wife, Nell Hayes, was in attendance on Saturday.
"It was great to see Mrs. Nell at the meet today," said McNeese head coach
Brendon Gilroy. "She addressed the team after the 4x400 relays before presenting the trophy in his honor."
Overall, McNeese won the team combined scoring with 361 points followed by Dillard with 153, Grambling 123, Northwestern State 122 and Texas Southern 88.
The Cowboys captured seven first places on the day –
