Track squads ready for SLC Outdoor Championship

LAKE CHARLES – McNeese outdoor track and field will begin competition at the 2023 Southland Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday in Commerce, Texas.
 
The Cowgirls, the 2022 SLC champions, will be looking to defend their first-ever team title while the Cowboys are still trying to lock down their first-ever title.
 
The meet will continue through Saturday at Texas A&M-Commerce's Memorial Stadium. All three days will broadcast on ESPN Plus.
 
SCHEDULE
Thursday's events will begin at noon with the men's combined events and the women's hammer throw. Running events will start at 7:15 p.m. with the women's 1500m followed by the men.
 
Friday will start at 11 a.m. with the conclusion of the combined events while individual events will get going at 3 o'clock with the men's shot put and women's long jump. The women's 100-meter hurdles will kick-off running events at 6:45.
 
The final day will begin at noon with the women's discus while the 4x100-meter relays will start the running events at 5:35.

Both the Cowboys and Cowgirls have several athletes ranked in the top 10 in the conference in their respective events and who will compete for not only points, but also a spot on the medal podium.

• Blanche Beard is the defending women's javelin champion.
• Mariah Lee won a bronze in the women's hammer throw.
• Jalon White won a bronze in the men's 400-meters.
• Omer El-Fadl is the defending champion in the men's 1500m.
• Jacob Kipkogei won a bronze medal in the men's 10,000-meters.
• Darren Taylor won a silver medal in the men's javelin.
 
INJURIES
The Cowgirls will be without two key members due to injuries – high jumper Sakari Famous and combined events competitor Morgan Talley.
 
Famous won the gold medal at last year's SLC Championship and earned All-American honors at the NCAA Championships.
 
Talley scored 24 points at the meet and won a silver medal in the heptathlon and a bronze medal in the long jump. She also placed fifth in the triple jump and in the 100-meter hurdles.
