LAKE CHARLES – Donning new blue and gold uniforms for the 2023 season, the McNeese Cowgirls' Soccer program participated in the annual intra squad scrimmage, where the Blue team came out on top 1-0 at Cowgirl Field Saturday night.

"I really liked seeing the blue team come out on top. I liked seeing them competing and finding a way," said head coach Drew Fitzgerald. "It was good to see some of the returners step in and pick up where we left off in the spring."

Senior Rachel Young butted the game-winning goal into the net in the 10-minute overtime after both teams played through two scoreless halves. Each half consisted of 25 minutes with a halftime in between. She spoke to what the team did well and how the team will continue to improve heading into the season.

"We have a lot of new people so I'd say communication is pretty big going forward until the first game of the season comes," said Young.

The gold team outshot the blue as they took 16 total on the night as the latter fought for four. Goalkeeper Briana O'Dell, a senior, fought her way to five saves in the performance.

The team will next partake in its first exhibition against UL-Lafayette on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Cowgirl Field.
