LAKE CHARLES –
Morgan Schooley brought home her first Southland Conference honor of the season for McNeese soccer, being named SLC Defensive Player of the Week as announced by the league Tuesday morning.
"Morgan has been instrumental in helping us to a pair of shutouts recently," said head coach
Drew Fitzgerald. "She was great in Friday's match at starting the attack and playing some accurate balls behind the defense and was composed on the game-winning goal."
Â
The St. Augustine, Florida native earned the game-winning goal for the Cowgirls against Louisiana Christian on a penalty kick 41 minutes into the match. Junior
Dom Ducal drew the penalty in the box to set up the defender to put the Pokes up 1-0 in the ultimate 4-0 victory.
Â
Schooley has started all eight matches for McNeese, only one of three players for the Cowgirls to do so this season, playing 682 minutes on the pitch. She earned her first goal of the season against UL-Lafayette in the season opener within the final minute of play.
Â
The senior has anchored a back line that has now earned two consecutive shutouts against Texas Southern and Louisiana Christian at home, both resulting in Cowgirl victories.
Â
The Cowgirls round out a three-match home stretch Thursday at 7 p.m. against Texas State at Cowgirl Field.
