Yepes Named Interim Head Coach

LAKE CHARLES – McNeese Vice President and Director of Athletics Heath Schroyer has announced Juan Yepes will step into the role of interim head coach of the McNeese Cowgirl soccer program for the 2025 season. Yepes replaces Drew Fitzgerald who resigned over the summer to take a job in the private sector.

Yepes spent the past two seasons as the Cowgirls' assistant coach, bringing a deep understanding of the program, a strong bond with the players, and a clear vision for the future.

"It's an honor," said Yepes. "McNeese has become home for me, and I feel proud to serve the program in this way. I'm deeply invested in these players and this University, and I'll give everything I have to help us succeed."

Yepes' vision for the Cowgirls is centered on building a team that competes fearlessly, plays with joy, and represents McNeese with pride.

"We want a team that grows together and builds something meaningful day by day," he said.

His coaching philosophy is rooted in setting high standards while also nurturing strong relationships with players.

"I believe in demanding high standards, in teaching with passion and clarity, and in connecting with players on a human level. To me, it's about inspiring people to become their best selves through the game."

Yepes aims to foster a team culture where players feel supported, motivated, and united.

"A culture where players feel safe to be themselves, where hard work and accountability are celebrated, and where joy and ambition can coexist," he explained. "A united group that values effort, humility, and respect."

Looking ahead to the 2025 season, his goals extend beyond the win column.

"We want to lay down strong foundations," he said. "To build a clear identity, to grow our young players, and to compete with courage and intention in every game. If we do that, results will follow."

The Cowgirls will open their 2025 campaign under Yepes' leadership on August 7 versus Angelina College in an exhibition match while also continuing to build momentum both on and off the pitch. The regular season opener is on August 14 when McNeese hosts North Dakota at 7 p.m. at Cowgirl Field.
