McNeese (1-0) is coming off a dramatic come-from-behind victory Sunday afternoon that saw the Cowgirls fight back from a one goal deficit and score two second half goals that help lift them past ULM in the first match of the season. The match was McNeese's second consecutive season opening victory.
Following the first half of play, the Cowgirls were able to overcome a sluggish start and dial up an offensive attack that plagued the Warhawks in the final 45 minutes. McNeese found relief in scoring goals from junior
Bettina Brulhart and sophomore
Gabi D'Alesandro, who also was credited with an assist. Though they trailed in shots taken, the Cowgirls were able to create opportunities and hold the advantage over ULM until the end.
The McNeese defense was able to find its groove through the latter part of the match and was led by an impressive performance from senior goalkeeper
Lauren Sestak. The Spring, Texas native collected eight saves and was assisted by a collective effort from the backline to stave off the ULM offense in the second half.
Prairie View A&M (0-0) is set for its first match of the season after a successful 2014 slate that included an NCAA Tournament appearance along with an 11-9 overall mark. The Lady Panthers return senior defender Brianna Powell, who was named the preseason SWAC Defensive Player of the Year and three other student-athletes who were named preseason All-SWAC.
The Cowgirls lead the all-time series against Prairie View with a 4-0 advantage. McNeese will also look to score back-to-back season opening wins for the first time since 2003-2004.
Admission to all matches is free this season courtesy of the Lake Charles American Press. In conjunction with the season opener, the first 100 students will receive free hot dogs provided by Big Daddy's Sports Bar and Grill while the first 50 students will receive a free AEC lunchbox.
