Baseball Faces UIW In Altered SLC Series

LAKE CHARLES - Due to a threat of possible inclement weather entering the San Antonio area Friday, the McNeese baseball team's league game at Incarnate Word as been moved up to a 3 p.m. start time.

LAKE CHARLES – The McNeese baseball team returns to Southland Conference action this weekend when the Cowboys make the trip to Texas for a three-game series with Incarnate Word at Daniel Sullivan Field in San Antonio.

After splitting a pair of mid-week games against ULM this week, McNeese is 8-8 overall on the year. The Cowboys are 1-2 in SLC play after opening conference action with a win and two losses to Houston Baptist, last weekend. McNeese enters the series with Incarnate Word with a .285 team batting average, while the pitching staff has a 4.98 ERA.
 
For the Pokes, senior outfielder Lewis Guilbeau is hitting .400 (18-for-45) with six runs scored, two doubles and 11 RBI. Senior first baseman Connor Crane has a .355 clip and leads the team with 22 hits, 15 runs scored, five doubles and 15 RBI. Freshman outfielder Shane Selman has turned heads in his debut season with a .328 average and team-high four home runs.
 
McNeese will send senior Kaleb Fontenot (1-2, 3.04 ERA) to the bump Friday to begin the series while freshman Bryan King (1-0, 3.00 ERA) is slated to get the nod for Saturday afternoons contest. Senior Austin Sanders (1-2, 7.11 ERA) will start for the Pokes on Sunday.
 
Incarnate Word (4-13, 0-3 SLC) has won one out of its last five games, dropping all three games to Southeastern Louisiana in its league opener. The Cardinals are hitting .221 as a team and have a 6.33 team ERA.
 
UIW is led at the plate by Brance Kahle who is batting .300 with 12 hits, two doubles, a triple and leads the team with 12 RBI. Ryan Gonzales leads the squad with 16 hits while three different Cardinals have each hit three doubles this season.

Incarnate Word is slated to start right-hander Bernie Martinez (0-2, 4.91 ERA) on Friday followed by righty John Shull (0-1, 5.50 ERA) on Saturday. The Cardinals will close the series by sending left-hander Tyler Lesley to the mound on Sunday.
 
McNeese and UIW have faced just six times in the history of the two programs, with the first meeting in 2014. The Cowboys have won all six matchups against the Cardinals, all of which took place in Lake Charles. Incarnate Word became a member of the Southland Conference in 2013.
