LAKE CHARLES- The McNeese Cowgirl soccer squad will play its final three games of the regular season at home, beginning on Friday against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 7 p.m. at Cowgirl Field while looking to secure a spot in the league postseason tournament and making history in the process.
McNeese is coming off a 2-0 week, shutting out Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word by identical 1-0 scores and improving its overall record to 11-5-1 and 5-2-1 in conference play, where it currently sits in fourth place but just one point out of third and three out of second.
The Cowgirls will take the field with two reigning conference Player of the Week recipients in defensive midfielder
Sarah Clayton and goalkeeper
Emma Roccaforte, each earning the award for the first time in their careers.
Corpus Christi (5-6-3, 2-4-2 SLC) will enter the game after dropping both games at home last week to Central Arkansas (2-1) and Northwestern State (3-0) and extending their losing streak to three straight games.
This will be the sixth meeting between the two programs with the all-time series tied 2-2-1. McNeese won the last meeting by a 2-0 score last year in Corpus Christi.
The Cowgirls have a chance to make program history this weekend.
With 11 wins on the season, the Cowgirls are just one win from matching the program's record in victories of 12, a mark that was set last season.
It will be a tough challenge due to the fact that McNeese will be playing two of the three teams ahead of it in the conference standings in Houston Baptist (Oct. 21) who is currently in second place, and Lamar (Oct. 26) who sits in third.
McNeese is 6-1 at home this season with its only loss coming at the hands of first place Central Arkansas by a 1-0 score.
The Cowgirls have posted a 6-1-1 record over their last eight matches while outscoring those opponents by a 17-3 mark.
