Cowboys visit Tigers in mid-week action

BATON ROUGE – McNeese will put its current two-game winning streak against LSU on the line Wednesday when the Cowboys visit the Tigers at 6:30 at Alex Box Stadium.

The game will broadcast live on the McNeese Radio Network (KEZM 1310 AM, kezmonline.com) as well as air live on the SEC Network Plus channel.

This will be the fifth time the two teams have met with Justin Hill, a 2002 LSU graduate, as the Cowboys' head coach. He's 2-2 against his alma mater and has won two straight over the Tigers – 7-0 in 2016 in Baton Rouge and 5-4 last season in Lake Charles.

The Tigers have won eight of the last 10 in the series and hold a 29-11 lead all-time.

Wednesday's game will be the first time since 2007 the Tigers are not ranked playing against the Cowboys, breaking a streak of 11 straight games.

The Cowboys are expected to start right-handed pitcher Tyler Wesley (3-3, 4.75 ERA) while the Tigers will throw Caleb Gilbert (3-4, 5.36), also a righty.

McNeese (22-26) is coming off a 1-2 weekend at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a series that saw the Cowboys break out of its early game slump in Sunday's finale when they scored all 11 of their runs in the first three innings in an 11-6 win.

That victory has McNeese sitting a 15-12 in and in fifth place in the league standings with three conference games remaining to play (at Lamar May 17-19). The Cowboys will step out of conference action this weekend when they host Prairie View in the final home weekend series of the season.

Cowboy second baseman Joe Provenzano leads the team in hitting with a .309 batting average. The senior is hitting .442 (19 of 43) in his last 10 games and will enter Wednesday's action with 236 career hits, 11 shy of the school's all-time record.

LSU, who took two out of three against No. 6 Arkansas over the weekend, is led in hitting by Antoine Duplantis who is batting .351.

The Tigers are tough to beat at The Box, having compiled a 25-7 record at home this season.
