McNeese track and field will open up the 2020 indoor season on Friday at the Texas A&M Ted Nelson Invitational. With the Cowboy and Cowgirl track and field teams kicking off their season on Friday, we will preview the event groups each day.
Coming off the cross country season, the young Cowboy and Cowgirl distance runners will look to take the next big step.
On the men's side, junior Cowboy Miguel Berrera-Lopez looks continue to be a force on the track. The 2019 campaign saw Berrera-Lopez breakout as a standout performer on the track. The Spaniard placed fourth at the conference outdoor meet in both the 10,000 meter run and the 5,000 meter run.
Sophomore runner Aaron Gilliam made an immediate impact by scoring in the mile indoors and making the 1500 meter run final outdoors. England native Joey Croft just missed scoring in the 3,000 meter steeplechase as a freshman last year, but after a solid cross country season, the sophomore looks to take the next step and become a valuable contributor.
Irish junior Luke Horgan will be looking to break through this year, having qualified for a final in each championship meet he has participated in but just falling short.
The Cowboys also added 2 new runners over the Christmas break. Transfers Gideon and Brannon Cheplak look to add depth to the Cowboys young group.
On the women's side, freshman standout Bonnie Andres led the way for the Cowgirls during the cross country season and will look to continue her great first season as a Cowgirl.
Junior Cowgirl Alissa Lander had an excellent outdoor championship meet last year, placing fifth in the 10,000 meter run and seventh in the 5,000 meter run. Joining Lander as a returning point scorer, Marta Lukijaniuk placed seventh last year in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Junior Jessica Fox will look to join Lukijaniuk as a point scorer in the steeplechase this year. Freshmen Ciara Gilroy and Holly Roberts will look to become factors within the conference in the 800 meter and 1500 meter run.
