Cowboys and Cowgirls Have Strong Showing in First Meet of the Season

COLLEGE STATION – Fourteen top-five finishes highlighted McNeese's performance at the Ted Nelson Invitational Friday afternoon at the University of Texas A&M in College Station, TX.
 
The Cowgirls recorded 70 points, placing them third in the field finishing behind only Northwestern State who placed 1st with 88 points and North Texas at second with 76.5 points. Out of Southland Conference opponents, the Cowgirls placed second among six teams.
 
The Cowboys finished seventh with 32.5 points, with UL-Lafayette (94), Barton County CC (71), and North Texas (62) being the top three finishers. Among Conference opponents the men finished third, behind Northwestern State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, out of six teams.
 
Cowgirl sprinter Tia Andrews started the 2020 season with a second-place finish in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.52.
 
Also for the women, Bonnie Andrews took second in the 3000-meters with a time of 10:18.16 and senior Alanna Arvie grabbed her first collegiate win of the year with her first finish in the weight throw with a mark of 64-5.75 and placed fifth in the shot put with a throw of 47-0.25.
 
On the men's side, Aaron Gilliam (8:45.79), Henry Kiplagat (8:47.35), and Daniel Saina (8:48.41) finshed 3-5-6 in the 3000-meter run. Kobe Nevills finished fourth in the 400-meter run with a time of 48.58.
 
The Cowboys and Cowgirls will be back in action next Friday when they travel to the University of Houston for the Fastrak Collegiate Invitational on January 24 before returning home for their first home meet of the season, the McNeese Indoor Inivite, on January 31.
