Cowgirls Lose in 2OT to HBU

Box Score LAKE CHARLES- The McNeese Cowgirl soccer squad came up short Sunday afternoon in a heartbreaking 2-1 double overtime loss to Houston Baptist at Cowgirl Field.

Houston Baptist was awarded a free kick near mid-field and Bryce Reynolds put a good ball into the box that was then one touched by Baylii Bieke who found the back of the net for the game winning goal.

Coming into the match, both teams had 19 points tying them for third in the conference standings.

With the win, Houston Baptist takes sole possession of third and the Cowgirls drop to fourth in the standings heading into the final game of the season.

In the first half both teams showed off their great defensive play by only allowing nine total shots, one shot on goal, and no goals scored between the two teams.

In the second half, the Cowgirls wasted no time. Rachel Palet found the back of the net in the ninth minute after striking a still ball with a full head of steam, due to a faulty pass by HBU, to give the Cowgirls the 1-0 lead.

Less than two minutes later, Palet received the first of four yellow cards given in this game. The second came in minute 68 to the Huskies Kaimyn Beal.

HBU would go on to tie the game in the 78th minute off of a goal by Noor Abukishk.

The last two yellow cards were given two minutes before the end of regulation to McNeese's senior mid-fielder Nola Prikett and HBU's goalkeeper Alanis Guevara who had an altercation after getting tangled up on a goal scoring opportunity.

With no goals scored in the first overtime period, they would play a second.

Two minutes in, the Huskies scored the golden goal ending the game.

"I Felt like we played well enough and created enough opportunities to win the match, but we need to be able to put teams away when those chances come up," said head coach Drew Fitzgerald. "We'll learn what we can from this and move on.  Also have to give credit to HBU for fighting hard even though they are a bit banged up at the moment."

The Cowgirls will have one more chance at breaking the regular season win record on Oct. 26 in their regular season finale and senior night match against Lamar.
