He was the first Cowboy to bat over .400 and he did it twice, hitting .407 in 1958 and .431 in 1959. He still holds the school record with a .369 career batting average. He played in the early years of baseball at McNeese, and three times led the team in base hits, twice in runs scored, once in dou­bles hit and once in triples. He was also a team leader in stolen bases. The team MVP in 1959, Ivey, who played in the outfield, was twice named to the all-Gulf States Conference team and in 1959 was selected the outstanding player in the conference.
