One of the few head football coaches in the nation with a Ph.D, Doland went on to become president of the university and to also serve as a Louisiana state senator. As the McNeese football coach he led his teams to a 64-32-3 record, to a conference title and to victory in the very first Independence Bowl in 1976. His teams also competed in the Grantland Rice Bowl. He also served as the university ath­letic director and was instrumental in McNeese becoming a member of the Southland Conference in 1972. Besides the McNeese Hall of Fame, he is also in the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and the Independence Bowl Hall of Fame.
