Hall of Fame
He brought McNeese to the forefront in track and field during a 21 year career. Four times his teams finished second in the conference outdoor track and field meet and he produced four cross country championships. He was also named the Southland Conference coach of the year five times. Four of his athletes were named SLC athletes of the year and he produced three all-Americans as well as numerous all-conference and all-Louisiana performers. Hayes went on to serve the university as athletic director for 10 years, retiring in 1996. During his time as athletic director, McNeese won seven league championships.
