CHARLES JEFFERSON
Jefferson, a native of Baton Rouge, helped lead the Cowboys to the school's very first Southland Conference title in 1976 and  to victory in the very first Independence Bowl game.  That year he had been the conference leader in pass interceptions with seven, the number also ranking seventh nationally.
Three straight years he led his team in pass interceptions and he would go on to intercept a total of 19 passes in his career, that mark ranking No. 2 on the current school chart and in the top 10 for Louisiana players. Twice he earned first team all-conference honors and in a poll conducted by the Southland Conference last year he was named to the all-decade team for the 1970s. Jefferson was taken in the fourth round  of the 1979 NFL draft by Denver (105th player taken) and also played with the Houston Oilers during his professional career.
