He wore many hats at McNeese State after a football career that saw him named the school’s most valuable player in 1949. Sweeney was a running back who was also a stand­out punter for the Cowboys. He went on to become a star as punter, place kicker, running back and defensive back at SLI (now Louisiana-Lafayette). And, he was offered a pro contract by the Chicago Bears. However, he went into the service and then began a career as an administrator at McNeese. He was coach of three national championship rodeo teams at McNeese and later became the university’s vice president, retiring in 1988. He lives in Lake Charles.
