He was the Cowboys top distance runner during a stretch from 1974 to 1977. He was the Southland Conference cross country champion in 1975 and 1976 and won a total of six first place titles during the SLC track championships (three in the 5000 meters, two in the steeplechase and one in the 1500 meters). O’Callaghan was named the conference track athlete of the year in 1977 and was also the league’s scoring champion. His performances helped the Cowboys to SLC cross country titles in 1975 and 1976 and he was named McNeese’s MVP in track three times. He continues to hold the school record of 3:42.9 in the 1500 meters. He lives in Ireland where he is a school teacher.
