He just may have been the best all-around athlete in McNeese history. He was a standout at any sport that he tried and at McNeese he was an all-American and all-conference performer in basketball. He was a key figure on the NAIA national championship team of 1955-56. He was the Gulf States Conference player of the year in 1956-57, was a two-time all-league first team pick and had his No. 34 jersey retired by McNeese. He still holds school records for rebounds in a single season (451), career (1,352) and career average (12.5). Without having played college base­ball he was given a tryout by Houston.
