He was a standout for Cowboy football teams in the 1940s, earning little all-American honors in 1946 and 1947 as a defensive end (he also played offense) during the univer­sity’s junior college days. He was also awarded the team’s most valuable player award in 1947. Neely played on Cowboy teams that averaged eight victories a season and played in three bowl games. In 1947 the Cowboys held eight teams scoreless and gave up a total of only 48 points, 35 of them in a loss to Tyler Junior College. He went on to play two seasons with the University of Houston and earn a degree in Geology
