He was a standout boxer in the early athletic years at McNeese State. He won the national junior college title for the 130 pound weight division in 1951 and was also named the school’s most valuable boxer that same year. Following graduation the Lake Charles native went into the service where he attained the rank of colonel before his retirement in 1979. During a 25 year career as an aviator (helicopter pilot) in the U.S. Army, Guidroz served three tours in Vietnam, was awarded the Silver Star in combat, two Distinguished Flying Crosses and two awards of Legion of Merit.
