He was a three-time conference champion in the late 1960s and early 1970s, also leading his team to four consecutive Gulf States Conference titles. He played the No. 1 position all four of his years and among the players he defeated was Davis Cup standout Tom Gorman. A native of Mexico, Medrano also became a standout place kicker for the Cowboy football team, playing on the 1971 squad that was ranked No. 1 in the nation. During his football career he made 44 of 46 PAT kicks and 10 of 22 field goals and at one time had kicked 23 consecutive PATs. He had tryouts with Washington and Dallas as a place kicker and is now a tennis professional in Leon, Mexico.
