He was one of the early pass receiving greats in McNeese State history, playing tight end. He played for four seasons and at one time held all of the school’s pass receiving records. Slocum remains as the school’s 13th leading all-time receiver with 74 catches for 945 yards and seven tds. He led the team in pass receiving in 1966 and 1967 and was named the team’s outstanding offensive lineman. Following graduation he went into coaching and hit great­ness as the head coach at Texas A&M where he posted a 123-47-2 record, won six conference titles and led his team to 11 bowl appearances. Four times he was named confer­ence coach of the year and he won 85 percent of his games at home, at one time holding a 22 game winning streak.
