A standout in the sprints and the jumps he was one of the Cowboys most decorated athletes in the 1980s. He was an all-American in both the sprints and the jumps and was a two-time Cowboy MVP. In the 1986 season he won the long jump and 100 meter dash titles at the Southland Conference meet and in 1987 he was the 100 meter cham­pion. He also won four conference indoor championships, three in the long jump and one in the 55 meter dash. Cooper still holds school records in the 55 meter dash and long jump indoors and in the 100 meter, 200 meter and long jump outdoors. He was twice named McNeese's ath­lete of the year and he went on to partipate as a profes­sional in track.
