A hard throwing lefthander, he was a two sport standout for the Cowboys, serving as a pitcher for the baseball team and as a javelin thrower in track. Many times he would toss the javelin on a weekend in a track meet and then go out and hurl a baseball game. He was an all-conference pitcher in 1967 and the following year won the league’s javelin title. He also won the baseball team MVP and during his career hurled 14 complete games, 170 innings, struckout 135 batters and had a career 2.32 ERA. An arm injury forced him to miss out on a professional career. Several years ago he went back to throwing the javelin in senior competition.
