Ortego was a member of the Chicago Bears and won a Super Bowl ring as a member of the 1985 team who many say is the greatest team in NFL history.

Prior to his three-year career with the Bears, he was an All-Southland Conference and All-Louisiana wide receiver for the Cowboys from 1981-84 and leading the team in receptions in both 1983 (21-340) and in 1984 (32-602). He ended his career with 1,202 receiving yards, which at the time, ranked No. 2 on the school's all-time career list. That number is still ranked in the top 20 at No. 19.

Also in 1984, he earned the program's W.T. Burton Award as well was the recipient of the Jim Downing Memorial Senior Scholarship Award.

With the Bears, he played in 31 total games as both a wide receiver and punt returner. In 1986, he caught 23 passes for 430 yards and two touchdowns and averaged 18.7 yards per catch. In the Super Bowl championship season, he returned 17 punts for 158 yards for a 9.3 average. He returned two punts for 20 yards in the Super Bowl. He was also featured in the famous "Super Bowl Shuffle" music video.
