He was a top scoring guard for the Cowboys for two seasons and wound up with 1,132 career points to rank among the top 20 scorers in the school’s history. Twice a team MVP, Shields lettered for four straight years and helped the Cowboys win two Gulf States Conference titles. In the championship year of 1963, he was not only named to the all-GSC team but was also selected the GSC basketball player of the year. After graduating from McNeese, he went on to law school to earn his law degree and is in private practice in the New Orleans area.
