He only played a season and a half for the Cowboys but during that time set school, conference and state scoring records. In a 1956 game against Southeastern Louisiana he scored 57 points which continues to stand as a McNeese record and is the 10th highest to ever be scored by a Louisiana athlete. Reigel led McNeese to a national title that year leading the nation in scoring with a 33.9 average. He was named to all-American, all-conference and all-Louisiana teams. He was the conference and NAIA player of the year and had his McNeese jersey retired. He is also in the NAIA and Louisiana Halls of Fame. He later returned to McNeese as a coach and posted a 56-20 record.
